Report: Number of distracted driving citations tripled

Posted: Updated:
CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) - A new report has some eye-popping numbers about how many Illinois drivers are still texting behind the wheel.

Since January 1, when Illinois became the first Midwest state to ban drivers from using hand-held devices, the number of citations for distracted driving has nearly tripled.

The report states Illinois State Troopers wrote 3,307 citations for distracted driving from Jan. 1 to April 30. During the same time period last year, only 1,222 citations were issued.

It is not yet known if the jump in tickets means the roads are safer since more people are being caught, or if it is just an example of how many people refuse to put down their phones when they are behind the wheel.

Law enforcement agencies told the Chicago Tribune the number of drivers breaking the law can be overwhelming. Many times, they will have 15 to 20 troopers out looking for violators and still do not have neough manpower to catch all of them.
