Total of illegal guns seized in Chicago tops 2,000

CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) - Chicago Police have seized 2,119 illegal guns since the start of the year, the department announced Monday.

One of the recent seizures happened last week in the Englewood police district, when district officers on patrol heard gunshots and saw someone firing a handgun toward the street from a bicycle, a police statement said.

After a chase, police recovered a handgun and took the suspect into custody. The suspect, a known gang member and convicted felon, was charged with unlawful use of a firearm, reckless discharge of a firearm and being an armed habitual criminal, the statement said.

In another incident, officers in the Gresham district were standing in an area known for gang activity when they saw a person try to hide an object in his jacket before admitting it was a handgun, police said.

Officers recovered a loaded revolver and took the suspect into custody. A second suspect claimed the gun belonged to him and said his friend was holding it for him. Both suspects were juveniles and charged with possession of a firearm with a defaced serial number.

“Our officers do incredible work to keep our communities safe, the City has made significant new investments in prevention efforts for at-risk youth and we have made our partnerships with community leaders a priority, because we all have a role to play in the safety of our city,” said Superintendent Garry McCarthy in the release.
