Nearly 70% of moms have jobs, up 800% since 1860

What a difference a decade makes.

Far more mothers are working outside the home now compared to mothers in years past.

“I can attest that I’m trying to balance both and working full time and I have six year old twins and sometimes the job feels like the vacation because I think being a mom is really hard,” said Cheryl Magiera.

“My mom always worked and she was a single mom so that was my role model and I never knew it could be any other say,” said Magiera in an interview with Fox 32’s Tisha Lewis.

Ancestry.com reports the national average of working mothers has increased by 800 percent since 1860. Nearly 70 percent of today’s mothers have jobs.

“Part of it is definitely financial. I know that we have a lot more options when both of us are working in terms of education and being able to afford the lifestyle we want,” said Magiera.

“The biggest challenge is making time for the kids because I work eight hours a day so I’m not really home with them, only at night. We’re up early in the morning so we don’t really have much time except for the weekends so I try to do what I can with them,” said Shenikka Robinson, a working mother.

Illinois has experienced a 40 percent increase in working mothers since 1960 – the biggest jump happened between 1970 and 1980.

“Moms are moving forward and it’s a personal preference,” said Betsy Doyle.

“I want to do both. Raising my children is my first priority but I would hope to have a job where I could still do that, maybe when my kids are in school or have flexibility with my hours,” said Brey Doyle, Betsy’s daughter.

Briana Rodriguez says she will stay at home with her two month old son until he is at least two years old.

“Once he’s old enough and I’m done breast feeding, I’ll go to school and then get a job to help pay for the stuff I need for college,” said Rodriguez.

Even so, 150 years of U.S. Census data indicates the growing trend of working mothers is here to stay.

Percentage of moms in Illinois who work:

1960: 29%

1970: 39%

1980: 52%

1990: 64%

2000: 66%

2010: 69%
