CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) - Two men are facing charges after police seized nearly 4,000 packs of illegal cigarettes and more than $280,000 in cash at a gas station in the North Lawndale neighborhood on Thursday.

After receiving a tip that a business was selling cigarettes without state and Cook County tax stamps, police responded to a gas station in the 3800 block of W. Roosevelt Road, according to a statement from police News Affairs.

Over the course of an investigation, officers made numerous cigarette purchases from the gas station and found they didn’t have a county tax stamp, police said. The smokes originated from Illinois and Missouri, police added.

Officers were able to determine through surveillance that the cigarettes were being transported to the store by Nasser Abdullah, 33, of Bridgeview, who was also storing large quantities of them in his garage, police said.

Police seized a total of 3,790 packs of unstamped cigarettes and $287,778 in cash over the course of the investigation, police said.

Abdullah was charged with one felony count of possession of more than 1,000 packs of contraband cigarettes. He also faces potential business licensing fines, totaling nearly $1.9 million, police said. Meanwhile, a co-worker, Quaiti Ali, 22, also of Bridgeview, was charged with a municipal ordinance for selling cigarettes without the proper stamp.

Abdullah was in bond court Thursday, although his bail was not immediately known Thursday evening.

Ali is scheduled to appear in bond court on May 29.
