Bullying may be to blame for young girl's suspected suicide

CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

A 12-year-old girl is dead and police said it appears to be a suicide, but detectives are classifying it as a death investigation.

The victim’s classmate said the girl was bullied. He also said their teacher told students about the tragedy Friday morning in their homeroom class. Once informed, the students started crying.

The victim apparently posted a poem on Instagram saying, “If I died, would you cry? Would you wonder if I was happy? Would I be on your mind?”

Her posts talked about bullies, divorce and feeling like no one cared. The posts even triggered suicide prevention advocates to respond.

Child Therapist Denise Duval said, “Parents need to continue to be vocal about it [bullying] and be a voice for their children. It’s important to help your children feel empowered. Parents should also be a support for other kids and families when they know something like this is happening."

“She was actually a pretty good student, she was funny, she likes to skateboard a lot, she was athletic,” said a classmate who was interviewed by FOX 32’s Tisha Lewis.

The classmate also said he was shocked to learn of the victim’s death.

“We know that there is a big problem with bullying and we don’t condone bullying,” said another classmate.

Duval said social media has made bullying more visible by giving kids another outlet for expression. This means there is more opportunity for intervention.

Chicago Police said part of their death investigation into the young girl’s death will include reports that she was bullied.

The victim was discovered dead Thursday in her family’s home. Police said she used a dog leash to take her own life. She was transported to the hospital where she was pronounced dead.

National Suicide Prevention Lifeline operates a 24/7 crisis hotline at 1-800-273-TALK (8255).
