WINNETKA, Ill. (FOX 32 News) - For more than a century, Winnetka has held a spring rummage sale. The long running event and popular sale took place Thursday. It is an event where designer goods are sold for a matter of dollars.

More than 400 volunteers help set up the sale at the Winnetka Community House, 620 Lincoln Ave. Streets in the area are blocked off during the sale.

Shoppers lined up before the sun came up in search of some deals.

The sale features 23 different departments for inside and outside the home. Shoppers can find linens, china, furniture, clothes and toys.

One shopper said she paid only $3 for a remote control dog toy for her daughter. Other shoppers said they have family come in from out of state to shop at the rummage sale.

All of the proceeds from the event go towards social service. What is not sold goes to Goodwill and the Salvation Army.

Many shoppers take off work or schedule vacations to attend the North Shore sale that runs from 7 a.m. until 3 p.m. Thursday. Veteran shoppers have one tip for newcomers: get a map and go to the room you are interested.

Next year, the sale is looking to break a record: they want to be the biggest rummage sale in the world.
