BURNHAM, Ill. (Associated Press) -

A longtime clerk for a suburban Chicago village is accused of stealing more than $650,000 in community money and spending most of it at casinos.

The U.S. attorney's office in Chicago said Tuesday that 70-year-old Nancy Dobrowski is charged with wire fraud and filing a false federal income tax return.

She was Burnham's elected clerk from 1980 until she resigned May 29, 2013, when FBI agents searched her office. Prosecutors say the thefts took place from about 2004 to 2013.

Dobrowski's lawyer's name wasn't released. The telephone number was disconnected at a listing for Dobrowski in Burnham.

Wire fraud carries a maximum 20-year prison sentence. She faces up to three years in prison on the tax count.

Burnham is just southeast of Chicago and has around 4,000 residents.
