Chicago named most resilient city in the U.S.

CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

In order for the world to thrive in the future, it’s going to need some strong cities, according to an article from Fast Co.EXIST.

According to U.N. estimates, two-thirds of people will live in urban areas by 2050. This puts a lot of pressure on city planners to adjust and adapt.

A new report judges 50 cities on their vulnerability and adaptive capacity. The rankings are based on five categories of vulnerability: climate, environment, resources, infrastructure and community. For example, ‘resources’ means a city’s availability to food, water and energy. The five categories of adaptability are governance, institutions, technical capacity, planning systems and funding structures. For example, ‘funding structures’ has to do with the ability to borrow and tap into both national and international money.

For the United States, Chicago tops the list at spot number 4. Pittsburgh comes in at 5th place. Cities in Canada took the top 3 spots.

Overall, North America scored very well on the adaptive side.

"The strong U.S. ranking is due to adaptive capacity, where resources, public accountability of elected officials, and the technology of the U.S. are dominating factors," the report says. "This suggests that U.S. cities will continue to see a pattern of effective public intervention, but often only after a major shock has occurred."
