DETROIT (WJBK) - Detroit police say the shooting of a 19-year-old at the Cinco de Mayo Parade in Southwest Detroit on Sunday may have been gang related.

The shooting happened shortly before 2:00 p.m. near West Vernor Highway and Ferdinand Street and forced organizers to cancel the parade, which is now in its 50th year.

Detroit Police Chief James Craig would not elaborate on why investigators believe the fatal shooting of Andreas DeJesus is gang related, but he did tell FOX 2's Randy Wimbley a Facebook message was sent to Detroit police on Thursday warning of violence.

"I don't know who to report this to," one facebook user wrote, "but I think someone should [know] there is some stuff going down at the Cinco de Mayo parade between the [Latin Counts] and [Surenos 13]."

"There's no indication at this point in our investigation that the person involved in the shooting is a gang member," Chief Craig said. But, he did say the victim has ties to the Latin Counts.

Nayeli Romero, a friend of DeJesus', tells Wimbley people had dreams about DeJesus dying. DeJesus also made reference to those dreams in a Facebook post, in which he wrote: "Ppl keep havin dreams of me gettin clapped I gotta sit my a-- dwn......after cinco de mayo lol [sic]."

Chief Craig would not say if the standing feud between the Latin Counts and Surenos 13 led to Sunday's shooting, but he did say the Facebook message police received was not handled properly.

"Whoever takes that information is the police and, as police, we respond. In this instance, this was an unsatisfactory response," Chief Craig says. However, he adds there "was nothing in that information that would have allowed us to prevent [the shooting]. We know that now based on our investigation."

Police arrested a 24-year-old suspected of shooting DeJesus just moments after it happened. Sources tell Wimbley the suspect has a concealed pistol license, and that the suspect told police he shot the victim in self defense because he was being attacked. Police have not confirmed this.

The Wayne Co. Prosecutor's office is reviewing the warrant to determine if the suspect will face charges.

Meanwhile, the future of the Cinco de Mayo parade is now in jeopardy. Co-Director of the Mexican Patriotic Committee, Belda Garza, released this statement regarding the events at Sunday's parade: "We are devastated by the turn of events that happened at the 50th Anniversary of the Cinco de Mayo Parade in Southwest Detroit. Our sincerest condolences go out to the family affected by this tragedy. The Patriotic Committee will soon meet with leadership and stakeholders in the community to assess the future of the Cinco the Mayo Parade."

DeJesus' family is planning a fundraiser for Tuesday, May 6 at the Puerto Rican Club located on W. Fort Street near Springwells Street in Detroit. The event begins at 4 p.m.

The DeJusus family is also asking for financial assistance during this difficult time to help pay for the funeral. Donations can be made by visiting any local branch of Chase Bank. Contributions should be made to the "Mari y Andres Para Siempre Memorial Fundraiser."
