10,000 attend Detroit Heart Walk at Ford Field

DETROIT, Mich. (WJBK) - There was a huge crowd at Ford Field Saturday for the American Heart Association's annual Detroit Heart Walk. More than 600,000 Americans die each year from heart disease. The heart walk helps raise money and awareness.

"All of us reflect upon our families and realize someone has been impacted," said Dave Girodat, CEO of Fifth Third Bank. "So how do we prevent it? All of it's preventable. You can't do it without dollars. You can't do it without awareness."

Organizers hope to raise $1.5 million in Detroit alone. The event is one of 300 different walks happening in cities across the country in the month of May. Fox 2's Alan Lee served as this year's emcee. Another heart walk takes place next weekend in Washtenaw County.
