CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) - Federal Immigration and Homeland Security officials have arrested 22 men in the Chicago area as part of a month-long operation targeting gang members, part of a nationwide effort that led to more than 750.

Twenty-two men were arrested in Chicago, Aurora, Cicero, Des Plaines, Elgin, Hanover Park, Hoffman Estates, Mount Prospect and Palatine as part of Project Southbound, according to a statement from the U.S. Department of Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

Project Southbound ran from March 12 through April 13 and targeted gangs with ties to the Mexican Mafia, according to the statement.

Twenty of the men arrested are documented members or associates of gangs such as Sureño 13, Insane Deuces, 18th Street, Latin Kings and Satan’s Disciples, ICE said. Two non-gang members who fell within the scope of the operation were also arrested.

Of the men arrested, 11 have criminal histories that include convictions for aggravated battery with a deadly weapon, theft, reckless conduct, delivery of a controlled substance, burglary, auto theft and DUI, ICE said.

Two U.S. citizens were arrested on outstanding warrants for burglary and drugs, according to the statement. Four Mexican nationals were turned over to local authorities on outstanding warrants while 16 were taken into ICE custody pending deportation, the department said.

A total of 638 gang members and associates from 145 gangs were arrested nationwide, the statement said. Another 119 were arrested for federal or state criminal violations or administrative immigration violations, ICE said.

HSI agents seized 54 firearms -- including a .357 revolver in Chicago -- in addition to 13.36 pounds of methamphetamine, 82.76 pounds of marijuana, 3.075 pounds of cocaine, 1.44 pounds of heroin, 10 vehicles and more than $166,000 in cash, ICE said.
