Ads on bikes leads to more Divvy docking stations

Posted: Updated:
CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) - Divvy – the city’s bike sharing program - will place advertisements on all bicycles and some vehicles after agreeing to a five-year, $12.5 million partnership with Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Illinois.

The deal will last for five years, with the city using $2.5 million annually to expand the Divvy system, according to a statement from the Active Transportation Alliance.

Docking stations will increase from 300 to 475 by the end of December. The increase will make Chicago the largest provider of bike sharing stations in the nation, according to the statement.

At the same time, all Divvy bicycles and some city vehicles will feature Blue Cross and Blue Shield advertisements, according to the city.

Along with more docking stations, the funds will add more equipment to sweep and plow bike lanes, install bollards, put up signage and add striping, the statement said.

Last week, Divvy announced that the bikes have been taken on one million trips totaling 2.5 million miles, according to the statement.

“It’s a fantastic fit for Divvy,” said Ron Burke of the Active Transportation Alliance. “This sponsorship deal ensures Divvy will have even more of a positive impact in the way people get around Chicago.”
