Palmer House locksmith retiring after 34 years

Posted: Updated:
CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) - Thirty four years, 14,000 locks and one man - some say he is the man who holds the key to the castle, but you can call him Mr. Bill.

Bill Volmer has been the locksmith at the Palmer House Hilton since December 18, 1979. That is 34 years. He knows every key and every lock of the place, having opened each and every room countless times over three decades.

He's even been of assistance to an endless line of celebrities who have made their way through the hotel - from helping the Skipper of Gilligan's Island, to being blessed by the Dalai Lama.

But his favorite celebrity run in was with the Terminator himself.

After a lifetime spent helping others, he is getting ready to leave it all behind. Mr. Bill is retiring. And it's not the keys or the locks he will miss, but the people.

Thirty four years, that'sa lott of locks and keys. And as the seconds tick away from Mr. Bill's final moments at the Palmer House, he is still needed.

And perhaps he always will be.
