EVANSTON, Ill. (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

A man found unconscious near Metra tracks in Glencoe last week died Tuesday evening, authorities said.

The man was found about 6 a.m. Thursday on the east side of the Metra tracks, near the inbound line, just south of the Hazel viaduct, Glencoe Police Deputy Chief Al Kebby said at the time.

The man, who was spotted by a Metra engineer, was transported to NorthShore University HealthSystem Evanston Hospital, authorities said.

David D. Dipaola, 49, of the 1100 block of Tower Road in Winnetka, was pronounced dead at Evanston Hospital at 5:46 p.m. Tuesday, the Cook County Medical Examiner’s office said. An autopsy to determine the cause and manner of his death is scheduled for Wednesday.

“We are trying to determine if he was struck by a train or if he fell and just struck his head and was on the right of way,” Kebby said Thursday.

The initial investigation indicated he may have fallen while walking near the tracks, causing a laceration to his the head, police said at the time.

Glencoe police could not immediately provide further details about the investigation Wednesday morning.
