BIRTHDAY BOYS: Minnesota quintuplets turn 10

Posted: Updated:

It was a very happy birthday for five brothers Fox 9 first introduced nearly a decade ago as the set of Minnesotan quintuplets turned 10 years old.

The question Christina Peltz is asked the most is: How does she do it?

“I didn't know I had a choice,” she laughed.

About 10 years ago Peltz and her husband, Eric , were struggling to get pregnant. They turned to fertility shots, and at 6 weeks, the couple learned they were having quintuplets. Back then when Fox 9 cameras caught up with them, the young family had no idea what the years ahead would bring.

“I just don't think anyone who has just one child... or even twins really understands,” says Christina

For the first year, the Peltz family had an army of volunteers helping around the clock as Austin, Blake, Clayton, Daniel and Ethan were brought home from the hospital. The boys were born prematurely at just 28 weeks, and their weights ranged from 3 pounds 3 ounces, to just 2 pounds 2 ounces.

A decade later, those preemies have grown up a lot.

“It is different, not easier -- just different," Peltz said. "It's more emotional now because they have to fight over everything, argue and question. You have to teach them stuff now, and parent. It's hard!"

Peltz describes Austin as the responsible one, Blake as very intense, Clayton as very quiet, Daniel as the interrogator, and Ethan as a big teddy bear.

Three of the boys are on the autism spectrum, yet all of them are thriving. These days, Christina and Eric Peltz say the biggest challenges are making ends meet and finding time for individual attention. Eric Peltz works two jobs, seven days a week for between 70-80 hours. He sets aside one night a week for time with each of his sons. They take turns going to Pizza Ranch, where kids eat free on Tuesdays.

“Having those times are few and far between," Erik Peltz said. "I thought if we set aside a night of the week, that's good for them and good for me."

On Thursday night, the Peltz family stepped out of the normal routine for the 10th Birthday Party.with the quints, who are still curious why others see their family as any different.

“When they are older, they will understand it more and appreciate it more I think,” Eric Peltz said.

There's a big misconception about food vendors at the Minnesota State Fair. Many people think you can set up a booth, work 12 days and make a pile of cash. But it's not that easy. Aside from a lot of hard work, it also takes some luck.
