Nike Combine searches for top high school football players in Midwest

CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

Speed, strength, and social media are what some student athletes are banking on during the off-season. They're high school football players from all over the Midwest trying to get noticed by college recruiters and to do it, they're attending camps and combines.

“It’s about getting your name out there so, it's pretty competitive and you want to stand out in front of everyone else," one student athlete says of the event.

Those invited to combines are competing for scholarships and a chance to take their game to the college level.

Paying for it is a family affair.

“It's only one percent of the kids out there that get a full ride in Division 1 and I hope he's in that one percent,” one dad says of his son, a football player competing at the combine.

The players are identified and drilled on how fast they run the 40-yard dash. The goal is to come in under five minutes.

All of these conditioning drills will determine the athletes speed, strength and skill. It's a two-day test and getting the right college with the right scholarship offer is determined by how much of the student’s highlight reels are posted on Facebook, Vimeo and websites like Huddle and 24/7.

"With the way technology can spread information now, it's college coaches…it's through the internet it's through social media," Nike Combine's Brian Stumpf explains. "You have to know what's going on and you have to have a presence. You don't have to be out there 24/7, 365 days a year, but you do need to have film from your season last year."
