Chicago 'the real deal' for George Lucas museum

Posted: Updated:
CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

May the force be with you, as long as it's right here in Chicago.

Mayor Rahm Emanuel is attempting to bring a pretty epic George Lucas collection to Chicago and he has put together a task force to make sure this happens.

For many of us, he defined our childhood while redefining what it meant to dream. And he is the source of most geek-outs worldwide.

Lucas has often referred to Chicago as a second home – and now we could be home to a world-class museum, housing his massive art and movie memorabilia collection.

Gillian Darlow is co-chair of the site selection task force for the Lucas Cultural Arts Museum -- a 12-member group put together by Emanuel to locate potential locations and help make this galactic dream a reality.

The museum was originally slated to be in San Francisco, which is Lucas’ primary home – though a National Park board nixed the idea in February. And while some speculate that Lucas is using Chicago to further convince San Francisco to reconsider, Darlow says that our bid is the real deal.

And in a time when Chicago is trying to land both Lucas’ collection and the presidential library for Barack Obama, maybe it makes us greedy – but we want them both.

So much a Jedi, Lucas has a decision to make – will he embrace the force or turn to the dark side?

The answer seems clear. Chicago is the chosen one.

If you want your voice heard on the museum, you can head out to a public forum Wednesday night at the Chicago Cultural Center on East Washington at 5:30 p.m.
