Henry County teen wont give up fight to cure cancer

Posted: Updated:
HENRY COUNTY, Ga. - A Henry County teenager is determined to do one thing in his life, cure cancer. When he is not getting ready for his high school graduation or playing a round of golf with his dad 17-year-old Tushar Mittal is working on the cure for cancer.

Mittal moved to Georgia from India in 2004 and said that he didn’t show any interest into science until about five years ago. Now the teen is working on a new type of cancer research involving oregano oil.

"It was actually 7th grade when I was introduced to science fair, because my teacher started off by saying you can do absolutely anything you want," says Mittal.

Mittal’s teachers at Dutchtown High School are astonished by Mittal’s work ethic.

"This is my 17th year in the classroom. I have never seen a student so driven, so passionate," said Dutchtown high school teacher Letitia Ruffin-Johnson. "He is the type of student who makes everybody feel comfortable."

For Mittal the freedom of science is exhilarating. Mittal said he can express himself through science like art or music.

Two years ago, Mittal set his sights on something he feared, the cancer that took his beloved grandmother.

"When I was exposed to science, the whole aspect of making anything possible, it gave me the power to fight it. It gave me the idea that I could go after the idea myself, continue the fight my grandmother couldn't," said Mittal.

Mittal presented research at an international science fair that drew interest from Blue Cross Blue Shield. Recently Emory University gave him his own lab space, to continue his promising work.

Mittal plans on continuing the research, when he goes to the University Of California Berkeley in the fall.
