Cat Cafe opening in New York City

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) - The first ever Cat Cafe in America is opening in New York City.

It's only going to be around for 3 days as a stunt by pet food company Purina One.

Cat cafes first took off 10 years ago in Japanese cities, where many people live alone in cramped high-rise apartment blocks that don't allow pets. The concept moved to London this year.

"People do want to have pets and in tiny flats, you can't," said cafe owner Lauren Pears, who opened Lady Dinah's Cat Emporium last month in an area east of London's financial district.

"There's not many places in London you can just curl up with a book and chill out with a cat or two on your lap," she said Friday. "I think that's what our success is down to."

At the New York pop-up location, patrons can sip "cat'achinos" while spending time with and learning about cats, cat health and Purina products.

The Cat Cafe will be open April 24-27  in Manhattan's Bowery neighborhood. Visitors can drop by for coffee, conversation and cat health education.  The schedule is at PurinaONE.com/CatCafe.

Purina has partnered with North Shore Animal League America to provide cats to mingle amongst patrons at the Cat Cafe. The cats will also be adoptable.

But, if you can believe it, there's something else this 4-year-old is even more excited about: Times Square is going gold. The chairman of the Times Square Advertising Coalition announced the crossroads of the world is going to light up in gold to raise awareness for pediatric cancer research.

Times Square characters want to be taken seriously and want their tips. The mostly immigrant workers are now called the Association of Artists United for a Smile and are fighting to protect their jobs, in light of a recent crackdown. Jorge Duran says he makes about $150 a day in tips dressing up as the Statue of Liberty. He says he stands around for hours, sweating inside a costume, and says it is annoying and unfair if he poses for a good picture and gets nothing.
