GRIFFITH, Ind. (Associated Press) -

Police in northwestern Indiana say a man fatally shot his estranged wife in a parochial school parking lot and later killed himself at his home.

Griffith Police Chief Greg Mance says 42-year-old Nina Castro was killed about 4:30 p.m. Monday outside St. Mary's School.

Mance says Castro was with her 16-year-old daughter while picking up her 14-year-old son from an after-school program at St. Mary's. The Times of Munster and the Post-Tribune report the teens witnessed the shooting.

The Gary police chief says 55-year-old Remanard Castro was soon found at his home in Gary, where he shot himself after being confronted by an officer.

Church Pastor Theodore Mens says St. Mary School wasn't in session because of the Easter holiday but that after-school programs were being held.
