Neighbors save woman yelling for help, trapped in Clinton River

Posted: Updated:
HARRISON TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WJBK) - A woman in Harrison Township says her neighbors are her new heroes after coming to her rescue when she was trapped in the Clinton River trying to save her dog.

Linda Larrabee says she was looking for her black lab when she realized he was in the river out back of her house. She says the dog recently went blind, and must have somehow made it past her electric fence and fallen into the water.

Larrabee then knew she had no choice but to jump in after her dog. But then she, too, realized she was trapped in the water.

The river is flanked by seawalls at some spots and, when standing, Larrabee couldn't get her grip because the bottom of the river was too mucky. Her feet would begin sinking in the mud.

She began to call for help.

Luckily, her neighbor's 12-year-old son heard.

He woke his parents up and they ran outside, and saw Larrabee trying to stay afloat and save herself and her dog.

"I knew she was okay because she was breathing, and talking, but she was pale and I didn't know how the heck we were going to get her out of the water," says Lisa Snoeberger.

Thinking fast, Aaron Snoeberger grabbed the dog by the collar and pulled him out of the water. Then, he ran and grabbed his work ladder and put it in the water. After stabilizing it, Larrabee grabbed on and was able to climb out.

Aaron says he is thankful his son wasn't in a deep sleep, or that the TV wasn't on, because then they may not have heard the cries for help.

Larrabee says she is so grateful to be alive, and calls her neighbors "good people" and is glad they knew how to help.
