`Mag Mile` stores cracking down on `smash and grab` robberies

CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

It's a nice night out for window shopping along Michigan Avenue, but when the temperature goes up, business owners say they're concerned about an increase in crime -- not just shoplifting but an increase in "smash and grabs".

Within the past month, two stores have been robbed after criminals smashed the windows, grabbed the goods and got away.

Store owners along the “Magnificent Mile” and just west of Michigan Avenue are doing what they can to protect their upscale goods.

Fox 32 News has learned the owner of one shop in the middle of Huron has mounted security cameras outside her boutique after she says would-be robbers tried to bust the windows with a sledge hammer.

It didn't work because the glass is shatter proof.

She's caught them on camera three times casing the business and during the day she has security guards as gatekeepers to better control who comes in and out of the store.

The manager of a household goods store tells FOX 32 they make it difficult for possible shoplifters to get in or out. There are two doors staggered; slowing down anyone who didn't pay for the merchandise they're walking out of the store with.

That's what happened at the YSL store on Rush Street. While workers were sleeping, smash and grab criminals shattered the glass of the store and stole dozens of designer handbags. No one has been arrested.

Owners say thieves aren't just shoplifting. They’re also taking away the sense of security for workers and shoppers. They say they're taking extra safety precautions to work "with" Chicago police and they want to make sure they're protecting employees and customers while keeping an eye on their merchandise.
