IIT Hackathon winners aim to change campus life

CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

Just imagine – you're confined to a room for one day and the goal is to create something, anything, that could change life on campus for college students in Chicago and beyond.

Fox 32's Tisha Lewis spoke to the winners of the Illinois Institute of Technology's first ever hackathon who did just that at the Re-imagination Challenge.

"My project is called 'Publiciity,' and so what I'm doing is a new way to communicate to our students on campus and alumni as well," said Elvin Moy, a Mechanical Engineering student at IIT.

Moy, 19, created Publiciity which posts video updates of on and off campus events – it won the peer choice category.

"We created an app that allows students to better plan for their courses," said Eric Tendian, an Information Technology Management student.

Tendian, 18, and 24-year-old Prasanna Balasubramani form the dynamic duo behind the winning idea in the complex category, which means it could take a couple of years to develop.

"I think going forward the biggest challenge will be getting different parts of the university to work together so we can accomplish our goal," said Tendian.

The winning idea created by Eyoel Asfaw nabbed the top spot and is happening now.

"We wanted to create a loyalty program to engage students to attend events on campus so just like you'd get points for going back to Starbucks multiple times, you'd get prizes for attending campus events," said Asfaw.

Fox 32's Tisha Lewis reports another idea included creating a smart kitchen by developing a communal kitchen monitored by sensors.

The hack-a-thon was hosted by Chicago start-up company, Monkey Bars. The judges included campus administrators, faculty and students and there is funding from grants and private donations to implement the winning ideas.
