There is a frantic game of "my list is bigger than your list" going on in this town as the two main combatants to become the next speaker of the Michigan House are trying to one-up each other.

LANSING, Mich. (WJBK) - Don’t hawk those “Virg for Governor” bumper stickers on E-Bay just yet.

In many respects Virg Benero is just like John Engler, Jim Blanchard and Bill Schuette.  Each is a consummate politician who loves the game and loves to talk about it.  You may not buy everything they are selling, but it sure is fun to watch them try.

But on this following subject the Virg has clammed-up.

When Congressman Mike Rogers shocked the political world by opting to become a radio talk jock instead of a sitting lawmaker in Washington, the Lansing Mayor’s name immediately popped up as a possible successor.

Every politician loves to be on the “will-he-or-she -run” list even if they have no intentions of running.  Some in the media erroneously drew that conclusion when Mr. Bernero issued a statement: “ At this time, I intend to continue serving the people of Lansing,” etc. etc. etc.

Words mean everything in this game and five words were easily overlooked i.e. ‘at this time, I intend…” In others words the door to running for Congress was wide open even though he never really said it.

Here’s the inside skinny.

First Mr. Bernero did not really want to serve in Congress.  After you’ve been in an executive post such as Mayor, why the heck would you relegate yourself to being one of 435 other folks in the U.S. House with about as much power as a 35 watt light bulb.

However if you were thinking two steps ahead about running for governor again, you might suck it in, take a lunge at it, do your time in D.C. and then use it as a stepping stone for governor.

What’s that you say?

Yes, he did run for governor and lost.

But that was then and now is now and later is later.

That does not rule out giving it another shot when the guy who beat him in 2010 can not run again

The calculus does make sense.  He’s presiding over a city that clearly has come back with the help of General Motors, Blue Cross, and others.  And he has a story to tell even though not enough voters listened the last time he spoke.

Well, of course, all  this moot.  He’s not running for Congress but let’s check back in five years to see if he runs for governor again.  Maybe those bumper stickers will be worth more then?
