CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

A 90-year-old man died Monday morning after he fell down a trash chute in the Portage Park neighborhood on the Northwest Side, police said.

The man was found unresponsive about 9:05 a.m. in the 4600 block of West Belmont Avenue, said police News Affairs Officer Jose Estrada, citing preliminary information.

He was pronounced dead at the scene, and his body was positioned in a way that led police to believe he fell down a building's trash cute, Estrada said.

The Cook County Medical Examiner's office confirmed the fatality, but would not release any additional information Monday morning.

Area North detectives are conducting a death investigation.
