Major projects start next week at CTA's Harrison station, Orange Line

CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

The CTA will begin work next week on two major projects, including a South Loop Red Line station overhaul, and repair work on a portion of the Orange Line.

The $10 million rehabilitation of the Harrison Red Line stop will include new flooring and lighting at the 70-year-old station, and see two new main entrance canopies, the CTA said in a statement.

Other work will reduce water pooling in the mezzanine and on the platform, and repair all three stairways. The station will be the first to be fully equipped with brighter, more energy efficient LED lighting, the CTA said.

The project is being paid for with TIF funds through the Chicago Neighborhoods Now program.

Work on the station begins at 4 a.m. Monday, when the Polk Street entrance will be closed. Customers can still use the main entrance on State Street, but the entire station will be closed on five weekends from May through early June.

Next week will also see the start of a $25 million project to repair the Orange Line's 18th Street connector.

Starting April 18, crews will start track work, structural improvements and waterproofing at the half-mile structure that carries trains to and from the Loop, the CTA said.

Funding will come from the Illinois Department of Transportation and TIF funds through the Neighborhoods Now Program, the CTA said.

The project will halt rail service between the Halsted and Roosevelt stations for five weekends, starting 10 p.m. April 18. A shuttle bus will take passengers between the stations.
