New Metra BNSF schedule, delays possible during major track project

Posted: Updated:
CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

Metra's BNSF line will operate on a new schedule starting Monday through early May because of a major track improvement project between Chicago and Hinsdale.

The project will replace ties and resurface 17 miles of track between downtown and the western suburb, Metra said in a release.

Work will begin downtown and proceed west, with construction scheduled to end in Hinsdale by May 2, Metra said.

Trains will run on a special construction schedule during that time. Some midday and evening trains will be delayed, but the rail agency expects rush-hour trains will see only "minimal impact."

Crews will work six days a week, mostly between 8 p.m. and 4 a.m. to minimize the impact on train service, Metra said.

People who live along the route should expect construction noise, and other trains passing through the area sounding their horns to alert work crews.

Some road crossings will also have to be closed because of the project, Metra said.

The BNSF Line carries more riders than any other Metra line, and sees heavy freight traffic moving through the Chicago region, according to the commuter rail agency.
