Arrest Warrant Issued In 77-Year-Old Man's Beating

Posted: Updated:
PHILADELPHIA -

Police have issued and arrest warrant for  33-year-old Danny Diaz for the brutal beating of 77-year-old Juan Ramos overnight on the 700 block of West Butler Street in Hunting Park.

The victim remains hospitalized in extremely critical condition.

"He was beaten very severely. It was a very savage beating," Capt. Mark Burgmann, of East Detectives, told FOX 29 News after police released a mugshot of Diaz.

"All we heard was somebody banging," said next door neighbor Michelle Jordan.

She was upset after police say the elderly Ramos was beaten with a wine bottle and a wooden bed slat.

Sources say he may end up losing an eye from the assault.

Diaz rented a room in the house where Ramos lived. Police don't know the motive for the attack.

"We're not quite sure what transpired that caused this beating but we do know he's the perpetrator who committed the crime," Burgmann said.

"His face was just bloody from his head down," Jordan explained. "He doesn't speak English, so we couldn't talk to him. All we could do was get him help."

This man is friends with the beating victim, he was moved to tears and speechless after learning of the early morning attack . Others here were heartbroken over the attack on their neighbor.

"He's a nice old man," one neighbor said.

"Do this to an old man, what you gonna do to me?" Jordan said. "It makes me wonder, am I safe?"

"Somebody put their hands on a 77 year old man, they'd do it to their own mother," another neighbor said.

Police say Diaz is from New York and has had prior arrests in several states. He's been renting a room at the house since December with his wife. He is on parole for a robbery in New York state.

"I would urge him to turn himself in immediately," Burgmann said.
