Owner of raided salvage yard charged in stolen vehicle case

CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

The owner of a Southeast Side scrap yard was charged Tuesday with possession of a stolen vehicle after the business was raided earlier this week, the Chicago Sun-Times is reporting.

Aaron Adelman, 29, listed as the owner of Adelman's Resource Solutions on the company website, was arrested Monday at the yard at 3033 E. 106th. Chicago Police said they have identified about 40 stolen vehicles that were intact or dismantled at the salvage company.

Police were called to Adelman's after a van owner tracked the stolen vehicle to the yard Monday, Cook County prosecutors said. The Ford Econoline van was parked outside the owner's home Sunday and was missing Monday, prosecutors said.

The owner found the van at the scrap yard — running — with no key in the ignition and the steering column peeled back, prosecutors said.

The victim called police, who found "numerous stolen vehicles" on the lot, prosecutors said at a bond hearing for Adelman on Tuesday. He was released on a $10,000 recognizance bond and is scheduled to appear in court next on April 23.

Car thefts are up sharply this year in the South Chicago police district where Adelman's yard is located.

Adelman's, whose main office is in Ohio, received a city property tax break in 2012 in return for a $2.5 million expansion at the former Wisconsin Steel site. In return, the company was due to cost taxpayers $162,000 over a dozen years.

Ald. John Pope (10th) has told the Chicago Sun-Times he would try to recoup the property tax savings Adelman's has received "if it's found true that they were doing this."
