Popular event venue evacuated on Lower East Side

NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) - A gothic revival synagogue on the Lower East Side of Manhattan that now serves as an event space was evacuated after structural cracks were discovered on the first and second floors.

Approximately 500 people including several celebrities were attending an event Monday night at the Angel Orensanz Foundation Center for the Arts when the balcony started shaking and floor began to sag.

Firefighters were initially called to the scene due to a smoke condition which was reportedly determined to be burning food.

When they arrived firefighters also inspected the balcony and ordered the evacuation of the art gallery and performance space at 172 Norfolk St.. It will remain closed indefinitely, according to the Dept. of Buildings.

The property owner must obtain permits and make repairs before the vacate order can be lifted, reported the Associated Press.

The Angel Orensanza Foundation Center is a popular wedding and event venue.

Actress Sally Field, Marissa Tomei and actor Bobby Carnevale were among the attendees at the Spring Gala for the SoHo Repertory Theater.

It appears the subway bedbug problem we've been reporting is getting worse. Commuters already have to contend with sweltering platforms, scurrying rats and packed train cars, and now there's another transit woe: fear of bedbugs.
