CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

Chicago police have a big job ahead of them. They now have to track down the owners of dozens of stolen cars found in a parking lot on the Southeast Side.

Investigators suspect the salvage yard was operating a chop shop with as many as 100 suspected stolen vehicles on the lot, a source said. One person was in custody early Tuesday, the source added.

It all began when officers got a call of a single stolen car on East 106th Street Monday afternoon. The vehicle's owner spotted his truck on the salvage yard property, and then called police. Cops then soon after that discovered the salvage yard with several stolen vehicles.

A source familiar with the investigation said some of the cars were being scrapped for parts while others were being shipped for resale overseas.

Adam Collins, a police spokesman, disputed the number of possibly stolen vehicles.

"Contrary to numerous media reports that were based on sourced, unverified information, at this time there appear to be about 19 stolen vehicles," Collins said. "While that number may rise, it will not reach the number being reported. Additionally, at this time there is no evidence to suggest any exporting of stolen parts/vehicles."

Police said it's going to be a "long investigation."
