Police: South Shore vehicle thefts increase

Posted: Updated:
CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

Police are alerting drivers in the South Shore neighborhood after an uptick in vehicle thefts was reported in March.

Specific theft statistics were not provided, but police said the "increase" in thefts occurred in the area bounded by East 67th Street, East 71st Street, South Jeffrey Boulevard and South Oglesby Avenue, according to an alert from Area Central detectives.

"In most of these incidents, victim(s) park their vehicle legally on the street and find their vehicle missing when they return," the alert stated.

Police recommend not leaving important items in plain view in a vehicle and always making sure the vehicle's doors are locked and that drivers have their keys.

Anyone with information on the thefts is asked to call Area Central detectives at (312) 747-8380.
