Demand low for concealed carry permits in Cook County

CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

Think Chicagoans are rushing to sign up for concealed carry permits, think again. At Article 2 Range in Lombard, business has tripled since concealed carry passed and two southeastern counties lead the state in permit applications.

The Journal Star reports Hardin and White counties have the highest per capita number of concealed carry applications - 12.5 applications per 1,000 residents, compared to Cook County with 2.3 per 1,000 residents, the least number of applications per capita statewide.

In an interview with Fox 32's Tisha Lewis Article 2 Range Instructor Keith Gerue says it is surprising that Cook County has the least number applications per capita statewide.

"We've been fighting this for a long time to get our rights," said Gerue.

Surprisingly it's areas with lower crime than Chicago that have more residents applying for a concealed carry permit.

"Well, they're doing a very well job in investigating the backgrounds of individuals especially with the crime rate but you know you have to take into consideration the people who are and the ages of these individuals who are getting these permits too that must come into effect and they must look at that thoroughly, especially young people that are 25 or 30, it's going to take a toll sooner or later and they are going to have to revisit this," said Andrew Holmes.

Holmes is a long-time community activist and advocate against concealed carry.

While Cook County had the state's lowest number of concealed carry applications per capita - it had the most applicants so far with more than 12,000 applicants.
