Uninsured lineup for a last shot at healthcare

CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

The #Road2Coverage bus made a stop at the Illinois National Guard on Saturday.

Inside, Get Covered Illinois offered one on one assistance to the many who waited until the last minute to sign up for affordable health coverage.

"Basically I'm unemployed now and my husband and I have had problems getting coverage," said Rashieda Weaver.

Weaver's story is all too familiar.

"I applied online but I didn't get anything back and I was so worried because I know the closing date is Monday and I told my son, look, we've got to do something," said Weaver.

"I didn't know if I really had health insurance. There's a difference in being in the system and approved. So I'm in the system but I don't know if I'm approved," said Tariq Weaver, 23 years old.

Rashieda and Tariq Weaver joined dozens who were greeted by Senator Dick Durbin.

"With the deadline coming more and more people are sensitive to it. The numbers have been trending upwards so there's more awareness," said Durbin in an interview with Fox 32's Tisha Lewis.

As families hashed out Affordable Care Act details ahead of Monday's deadline, Durbin admitted enrollment could be better.

"And I think they will be but we're talking about over six million nationwide who now have health insurance through this program. Look at Illinois, over 100,000 now have health insurance now that didn't before, over 200,000 are now in the Medicaid program. There are 130,000 young people who now have health insurance because their parents could keep them on their plans until they reach the age of 26. We're not going back," said Durbin.

Fox 32's Tisha Lewis reports those who miss Monday's deadline to enroll will pay a penalty collected by the Internal Revenue Service. The penalty pay not apply to you if you are in jail or prison, you are an undocumented immigrant or if you are part of a federally recognized religion that prevents you from accepting insurance benefits such as the Amish church.
