Roof collapse at U.S. Steel in Ecorse

Posted: Updated:
ECORSE, Mich. (WJBK) - A giant pipe has collapsed the roof of a building in Ecorse.

The collapse happened during the night shift at the main building of U.S. Steel Corporation, formerly known as Great Lakes Steel.

Police say no one was injured in the accident and all employees have been accounted for. Twenty employees were in the building at the time.

Employees tell FOX 2 the large pipe is approximately 200 feet long and 20 feet wide. The pipe known as a down comer and takes waste from the steel-making process and transfers it out of the plant into a dirty gas main.

The pipe requires occasional cleaning to prevent buildup. Employees say an outside contractor was at the plant cleaning that pipe Thursday when, for some reason, it collapsed and came crashing through the roof in a brief fireball around 6 p.m.

An internal investigation has been launched to find the cause of the collapse, and to assess the damage to and integrity of the building.

This is the same plant where a blast killed one worker and injured two others in December 2013.
