Cirque du Soleil 'Amaluna'

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

Cirque du Soleil's "Amaluna" re imagines Shakespeare's "The Tempest" with a chorus of contortionists.

"Amaluna" is set on an enchanted island governed by glistening goddesses; 70 percent of the artists in are women.

As the head of wardrobe, Larry Edwards wears many hats, including hairstylist, tattoo artist and dresser. The one thing he doesn't do? Makeup.

"They all do their own makeup they were taught how do to their makeup in Montreal," he says. "This is actually Andrianne's face which they then fold over the top so that we just spray paint the tattoo on."

When you tour the United States with almost 50 artists, 65 trucks and 130 costumes, practicality is king. The fact that Cirque du Soleil has invented washable leather echoes their "anything is possible" mantra.

"Amaluna" is playing at Citi Field in Queens through May 18, 2014.

For the first time in years, more than 1 million New Yorkers are smoking, marking a disturbing rise of tobacco use in the city that pioneered a number of anti-smoking initiatives that were emulated nationally.  Sixteen percent of adult New Yorkers smoked in 2013, up from 14 percent in 2010, which was the city's lowest recorded rate, according to the findings released by New York City's Department of Health.

Report: health risks at some nail salons

One of the most surprising findings in a report from the New York City public advocate is that city officials have virtually no authority over how nail salons are run. The city can't enforce standards like they do with restaurants, so it's clearly a case of beauty buyer beware. We get our nails done without thinking too much about it.
