NEW LENOX, Ill. (FOX 32 News) -

A family of five was not home when their New Lenox house exploded Monday afternoon.

"It's just devastating. They've lost...I mean, everything is gone," said Janice Wenzel, the homeowner's sister. "It's completely gone."

Cell phone video shot by a neighbor showed the home just minutes after the explosion.

Relatives of the homeowner in New Lenox could only stand by in shock.

Around 2:30 p.m. Monday afternoon, the neighborhood was rocked by the explosion in the 700 block of Lambeth Lane.

"I saw across the street a big billow of smoke and I actually came out in time to see the pieces of the house just fall to the ground," said neighbor, Kathy Haag.

Marge Brennan who lives just behind the house felt her entire home shake.

"I ran out of the house and ran over there, we just started yelling just in case there was someone in the house," Brennan added.

Fortunately, the family of five was not home.

Relatives said if it had happened just 20 minutes later, it could have been an even worse tragedy.

Neighbors brought the family clothing throughout the day, but it's the memories inside the home that hurts the most.

"It's still all those little things that you don't realize that you have. But they're ok, the kids and my brother and sister in law are ok," said Wenzel.

Investigators spent Monday sifting through the rubble of the home trying to figure out what caused the explosion.

FOX 32 News was told the family has insurance and planned on leaning on relatives until they can find a permanent residence.

A Nicor gas spokesperson said it was working with investigators to determine a cause and origin of the explosion, Monday night.
