Activists stage "surprise inspection" after complaints about Detroit store

Posted: Updated:
DETROIT, Mich. (WJBK) -

A Detroit market got a surprise visit from activists Sunday after complaints that it's the filthiest grocery store in the city. Customers say Superland Market is a mess from dirt on the floors to bugs on the shelves. We went along and caught the mess on camera.

There's also a foul odor inside the store on Detroit's west side. Malik Shabazz says some callers to his TV show tipped him off about conditions here. When he visited he found they were not exaggerating.

"I'm hurt," Shabazz told Fox 2. "It's a lot of issues."

Shoppers have mixed feelings. Some say the conditions make them sick, others say they have no complaints.

The store's owner, Steven Najor, says they're going to work hard to clean things up. When asked how it got this bad and why nothing was done sooner he said, "I don't have an answer for that one."

Najor employs several people from the neighborhood and Shabazz says that's a good thing.

"He's helping people out, poor families and things. That's to his favor, that says he cares. But we want to work with him to complete the job, to clean this place up."

No timeline on how soon that will happen and if it doesn't Shabazz says they'll boycott the market.
