Ill. governor GOP candidate Kirk Dillard starts plane tour

CHICAGO (Associated Press) -

State Sen. Kirk Dillard's campaign for Illinois governor is getting a boost from his onetime employer: Former Gov. Jim Edgar.

Dillard announced on Sunday a two-day plane tour of Illinois with Edgar by his side. Dillard was once chief of staff to Edgar.

Edgar says Illinois needs a governor with experience and who won't be learning on the job. The comment was a reference to businessman Bruce Rauner. The venture capitalist leading in polls and fundraising is seeking public office for the first time.

The other GOP candidates are also making a final push with Rauner and state Sen. Bill Brady taking statewide tours over the weekend. A spokesman for Illinois Treasurer Dan Rutherford says he's focused on making phone calls.
