Young candidate hopes to make history

CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

One of the candidates on the ballot in Cook County is Adam Miguest. He is 23 and he's running for Metropolitan Water Reclamation District Commissioner.

They say the apple doesn't fall far from the tree.

Adam's father, Michael, once ran for Vice President of the School Employee Alliance, his wife was chief of staff to a Chicago Alderman and now if their son Adam gets his way, he'll be the youngest person to serve as a Metropolitan Water Reclamation District Commissioner.

"I'm 23 years old," said Adam Miguest in an interview with Fox 32's Tisha Lewis.

But first things first - this Tuesday's primary election.

"This office is one of the biggest offices that gets overlooked. This year they have a 1.2 billion dollar budget and that's annually. They're the ones who make sure our infrastructure is good, they make sure the water in the streets goes down the sewers correctly," said Miguest.

Miguest is the youngest candidate amid a pool of nearly a dozen experienced contenders vying for three open seats.

"I think I will be able to bring us a lot of support via social media so they've been quite ecstatic about it because at the end of the day I'm not only telling all those people on Facebook to vote for me, I'm telling them to vote for my running mates as well," said Miguest.

Without decades of politics on his side he's using another tool to get out the vote - his three thousand plus Millennial infused Facebook friends.

"And I said hey, anybody you know in Chicago, anybody Cook County, if you believe in me, if you think that I'll be good for this office, please forward this event and tell them they need to come out and vote for me," said Miguest.

More than 26,000 people were invited. So far 556 say they're going.

"I'm not a Facebook person and obviously he's put together something that I don't understand that will level the playing field," said Adam's father Michael Miguest.

"I really want to be an example for people close to my age," said Miguest.

Adam's passion for politics started at 12 years old when he volunteered to help pass out literature for a Chicago alderman. Since then he's worked for Congressmen Bobby Rush and Brad Schneider. He currently works at the Cook County hospital in public health.
