Metro Detroiters go bald for a beautiful cause

Hundreds of Metro Detroiters are sporting a drastic, new look and they're proud! Men, women and children had their heads shaved in Romeo on Saturday to raise money for childhood cancer research.

Blonde hair, red hair, even a head full of curls all met with the same fate at Romeo Lions Field House in Romeo. More than 500 brave souls all had their heads shaved during the 7th annual fundraiser for St. Balderick's.

"It's the most amazing event and being part of this is awesome," said Kerry Henderson.

She's one of 30 stylists who were buzzing away for more than four hours straight and of course they couldn't do it without volunteers -- like Dustin Tiemeyer who said goodbye to five years worth of curls.

"Oh, I'm sad and happy all at the same time," he said. "It's a great cause. I'm really happy to be here."

Shaving off your hair may seem like a bold step, but consider this: Every year, 175,000 children are diagnosed with cancer worldwide and more children die from cancer than any other disease. That's why this event is both fun and emotional for everyone involved.

"I'm crying because I'm so happy and because I'm sad over my friend who passed away at the same time," said one participant. 

Earlier this week some young people started things off having their heads shaved on live TV at fox 2. More than 1,500 of these parties take place around the world -- and this event in southeast Michigan is one of the largest. Participants are bald and beautiful and they have big hearts, like Jake Jacklyn who will go to school bald next week for a very good reason!

"So we can save people from cancer," Jake said.
