Bridgeview Courthouse defendant attempts to escape

Posted: Updated:
CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

Shouts of "officer down" rang out when a female sheriff's deputy was slammed into a Plexiglas partition by a fleeing defendant at the Bridgeview Courthouse Monday afternoon.

Deputies took off after the defendant, chasing him into a field across the street and finally apprehending him.

The sheriff's office identified him as 28-year-old William Poindexter. He was shirtless during the pursuit because he managed to slip out of his shirt when someone grabbed him.

Sheriff's officials said that he injured two deputies and one civilian as he fled the courthouse. All injured are expected to be okay.

It all started in the first floor courtroom of Judge Carmen Aguilar. Poindexter, who had received probation for two aggravated battery charges last Fall, had allegedly violated his probation by testing positive for marijuana.

When the judge told Poindexter it wasn't her case and that he would have to remain in custody until Friday for another hearing, he bolted.

The sheriff's office said that Poindexter has been hospitalized as a precaution. He is from Midlothian.

There is no word on what additional charges he may face because of his attempted escape.
