DETROIT (WJBK) -

A high-ranking Detroit EMS officer has been charged with sexual assault.

The alleged sexual assault happened in 2002. The alleged victim was under the age of 13 at the time.

Dwayne Dixon, 44, resigned after being charged with four felony counts of criminal sexual conduct. Each carries a life sentence.

FOX 2 legal analyst Charlie Langton explains why a case like this does not have a statute of limitations.

"Criminal sexual conduct, which is rape, is the worst charge you could have. It doesn't matter when it happened years and years and years ago because it's so serious you can bring those charges at any time. And there's good reason for that - we don't want people go around raping and just waiting out the clock to see what happens," he says.

Langton says if Dixon is convicted he could receive multiple life sentences.

The city of Detroit has alerted the state that Dixon's EMT license has been revoked not only in the state of Michigan but also across the country.

His pre-examination is scheduled for next week.

This is the second time in a week a Detroit employee has been charged with a sexual assault. Wayne Co. prosecutors have charged Deon Nunlee in connection with the sexual assault of a woman that occurred when he was dispatched to a disturbance at her location.

The city of Detroit said in a statement:

"We will not allow the misconduct of two people to overshadow the hard work and integrity of thousands of men and women employed by the city of Detroit. Each and every one of them is expected to follow the law. Anyone who does not do that will be dealt with to the fullest extent of the criminal justice system."
