New app to help drivers pay Chicago parking meters - FOX 32 News Chicago

Parking meter app will make payment more convenient

CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

We've probably all been there. You fill the meter and two hours later, you are still stuck in a lunch meeting. So you can't run out to refill the meter and chances are, you'll have to pay a parking ticket.

Pretty soon, your smartphone will be able to fix that. Motorists will be able to pay for street parking in a more convenient way - by using their mobile phone.

Chicago Parking Meters LLC has agreed with the city of Chicago to start allowing the mobile payment option this spring.

A driver would enter the meter number and amount of time needed through the smartphone app. There would be no receipt to display, and drivers would not have to return to the car to extend the meter. Coins and credit cards would not be necessary.

"That would reduce the time you spend standing outside and it's cold in Chicago," one man told FOX 32 News. "Smartphones make things more accessible."

Some drivers said it would reduce their anxiety about parking on the street in Chicago.

"I have kids and don't like to leave them in the car to go to the meter," one woman said. "On my phone would be a lot easier."

"I find the easier you make it, the more people will be compliant," The Expired Meter publisher Mike Brockway told FOX 32.

Mayor Rahm Emanuel says the new technology is part of the city's renegotiated lease with the parking meter company.
