CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

A garden hose connected to an outside faucet has been supplying water to more than three dozen Elgin families for more than a month.

"It's actually kind of frustrating because you know overnight, the water froze and waking up to find out that there's no water, it's actually pretty upsetting, you know? Not being able to take a shower and all that," said Javier Delatorre.

The water supply line from the street is frozen due to the harsh winter season.

The city of Elgin has provided all affected homeowners with a new hose, and hooked it up to a neighbor's house.

"What we do for the donor house or business [is] we remove the register off their water meter, so they are providing water to their neighbors…it's a good gesture with no cost to them," said Kyla Jacobsen, Elgin Water Director.

Jacobsen has been with the water department for 29 years, and she's never seen the problem so widespread. She said that it's because of the polar vortex, and how deep the frost line has gone. Also, that the only option besides the garden hose would be to dig up and fix the service lines.

"That's something we don't want to do, it could be upwards of $20,000 a dig," Jacobsen said.

The Delatorre family is getting by, but ready for winter to end.

"I just want it to leave already," Delatorre added.

Delatorre is grateful, though, to have water again.
