CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

A 17-year-old boy died after he was struck by a Metra train on the Northwest Side Friday morning, snarling the morning commute for passengers on the Union Pacific Northwest line.

Erik Lucansky was struck by train No. 605 near the Norwood Park station at 6088 N. Northwest Hwy. about 6:50 a.m., according to Metra officials and the Cook County Medical Examiner's office.

He was taken to Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge, where he died at 7:27 a.m., according to the medical examiner's office.

An autopsy performed Saturday found Lucansky died of multiple injuries he suffered when he was struck by the train and his death was ruled an accident, the medical examiner's office said.

Trains were stopped for about 45 minutes in the heart of rush hour, according to Metra's website. Service resumed about 7:35 a.m.

Metra officials and police are investigating.
