$100 million in state aid on the way for potholes

Posted: Updated:
LANSING, Mich. (WJBK) -

Pothole help could soon be on its way to a street near you. Word from Lansing Thursday says at least $100 million could be allocated by next week.

"They had 100 million [dollars] there's general agreement on that is almost certainly going to be part of the budget supplemental, and we'd like to see that done by March 14th," says State Sen. Roger Kahn, (R) Senate Budget Chair.

But other lawmakers say that money is not enough.

"The fact that 100 million [dollars] of it is going to help our locals with their coffers that are empty right now - salt, money, the pothole crisis - everybody knows that 100 million [dollars] isn't going to go far enough," says State Rep. Joe Haveman, (R) House Budget Chair.

Which is why House Republicans want to spend an additional $115 million, not for filing potholes, but for bigger road projects.

The governor will meet with the two Republican legislative leaders on Monday to sort all this out, but he is still pushing for considerably more revenue for a long-term fix.

Last summer voters said they wanted better roads but didn't want to pay for them. Maybe that attitude has changed after this rough winter.

The governor still wants $1.3 billion for the roads, but in the two years of trying to get the votes he has failed.
