CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

Our brutal winter has caused high heating bills for many people. ComEd is offering $10 million in extra assistance for those who need it.

Commonwealth Edison said January was one of the coldest its service territory has seen in more than 50 years, driving electric service usage up an average of 6 percent compared to a typical January.

The largest electric utility company in Illinois said customers that can show proof of hardship are eligible for up to $1,500 in assistance. There are also flexible billing budget plans that allow customers to pay a specific amount every month.

ComEd said nearly 28,000 customers were able to avoid disconnection last year because of assistance funding and other programs.

Here is how you can get more information on the program, and whether you qualify: Call 1-888-806-care (1-888-806-2273) or visit www.comed.com/care.
