National Day of Unplugging approaches

CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

It's hard for some people to put their smartphone down. National Day of Unplugging is meant for people of all backgrounds to embrace a day of rest, without the use of mobile technology.

Checking emails, sending text messages and taking a quick glance at our Facebook page seem routine.

"If I tried really hard [I could prevent myself from using my phone all day], but I probably wouldn't be in a very good mood," said one student.

"Absolutely. The hard part would be the music. Other than that, I could do everything else," said another student.

People would probably end up having a lot more time on their hands, so how would you spend it?

"With [my friends], or with my thoughts," said a student.

That's the goal of a non-profit group called "Reboot." They're asking families, teenagers and singles to take a break from technology for National Day of Unplugging.

On Friday, starting at sundown, it will be the five year anniversary of getting people around the world to unplug and spend time with loved ones.

Child experts said that there are a lot of benefits to unplugging.

"We have to remember that human beings are formed on relationships and we communicate best when we're communicating with each other, and sometimes when we're using too much technology, we're missing the benefits of the emotional connection and we're missing the sort of affect that you can't get from a text," said Denis Duval Tsioles, a child therapist.

Parents have to serve as the role model, put down the phone, and turn off the computer and TV.

Tsioles said that if parents make it fun, their kids will enjoy it too.

"I think if enough of my friends did, I would. I think people use their phones and computers to stay connected because they don't want to miss out, but I think if everyone was disconnected, I think it could have a chance of being successful," said a student.

National Day of Unplugging starts Friday, March 7 to 8.
