Police: Was deadly motel shooting a revenge crime?

Posted: Updated:
LILBURN, Ga. -

Gwinnett County detectives will investigate whether the weekend murder of a man at an extended stay motel was a possible revenge shooting.

Gwinnett County police Monday announced the arrest of 40-year-old Philip Pugh in Mississippi.

Pugh is charged with Saturday's murder of 50-year-old Vincent Newsome.

The shooting took place at the InTown Suites at 4142 Georgia Highway 78 in unincorporated Snellville.

Witnesses told investigators Newsome was shot multiple times in a breezeway outside the motel.

Medics transported Newsome to Gwinnett Medical Center in Lawrenceville where he later died.

Police issued an arrest warrant for Pugh shortly after the death after talking to witnesses.

Gwinnett County police did not release any details of Pugh's arrest in Mississippi but did reveal a possible motive for the killing.

Corporal Jake Smith told FOX 5 Pugh and his wife filed a police report five days before the shooting.

In the report, the Pughs claimed they had been drugged, and the wife had been raped by several men including Newsome five months before.

They also claimed the attackers videotaped the attack.

Corporal Smith said investigators will try to determine if the shooting was a revenge crime.

A statement issued by InTown Suites commended law enforcement personnel for their swift action.

The statement said, "Nothing is more important to us than the safety and security of our guests and employees."
